Artist Statement

For over 40 years I have pursued meaning through the creation of art. I create because I must. Through the making of art, I find deep spiritual and philosophical connections to life in all its variety. My work covers a wide range from full realism to non-objective abstraction, but the subject matter is less important than the engagement of an unfolding mystery: life. Like a kind of visual jazz, my art unfolds like a living being and takes on a life of its own. Using classical and modern ideas and combining them, I have found fertile ground for exploring creation, our humanity, and the underlying order of the universe.

The results of this exploration are works of art that go out into the world to engage with viewers. I realized long ago that I have little impact on how others will view or understand my work, so I believe others will engage my work from their own perspective. When asked what a piece means, my response is “What do you see?”

As a thematic painter, I often spend time with one idea, exploring it in depth through series of paintings. Some of these themes have continued for years finding new expressions over time.

My work is about relationships, overlapping and layered relationships.

My relationship to each piece is unique, each work an individual; they are like my children. Each must become its very best self; my role is to help it get there. Some children are easier than others, but I love them all.

The plastic qualities of art are in relationship. How do the shapes relate to color, to texture, to form, etc.? These relationships define a work of art, and should be considered central to its existence. Even an objective painting is just paint on a surface.

A relationship exists between the art and subject matter. How do the plastic qualities of art relate the subject and bring it to life?

There is a relationship between a work of art and the viewer. How people view art is personal. We send our children into the world and hope for the best.

I paint because I must. My painting is therapy and spiritual practice. Making art soothes my soul and helps me process my own questions about life, the world around us, and our place in the cosmos. My work is a reflection of my philosophy, theology, and emotional states.  What do you see?
